A handful of people are defending most of Earth’s biodiversity. Our survival depends on their strength and resilience.

Instead of helping these people, our governments collaborate with regimes who are more than willing to infringe upon their rights and destroy their forests.

Of course, let’s not forget this isn’t happening just in Brazil, Congo, Indonesia etc. it’s also happening in the US and Canada…

If we manage to destroy them, we are certainly going to destroy ourselves. 

BOLSONARO IS KILLING THE RAINFOREST

The Amazon region is home to the largest rainforest in the world and the richest river system. The Amazon River collects nearly 20 percent of the fresh water found on Earth, while the forest conditions and regulates the climate of the entire planet. 
The rainforest stores 90 to 140 billion tons of CO2, and its continued destruction causes huge quantities of this substance to be released into the atmosphere, with catastrophic consequences for the environment.
If today in the tourist maps of Peru we find the Yaguas National Park reported, it is also thanks to Liz Chicaje Churay, a Peruvian activist of the Bora people who for years fought so that this slice of the Amazon forest on the border with Colombia was protected from poachers. by illegal loggers and miners. Supported by her indigenous community, this 38-year-old woman had the courage, despite years of threats, to oppose the exploitation of these lands that the local population considers sacred, eventually gaining political support for the area to be declared a national park.

SONIA GUAJAJARA-A WOMAN WARRIOR

Today, in Brazil, about two thousand activists live under the threat of ‘pistoleiros’. Among them, Sônia Bonê Guajajara, vice president of the Coordination of Indigenous Organizations for the Brazilian Amazon. The main organization fighting for the defense of the indigenous people, COIAB represents about 450,000 Indians from the Amazon.
According to the Survival organization, a supporter of all indigenous people in the world, 305 tribes live in Brazil, about 900,000 people, and most of the protected territories inhabited by indigenous peoples are located in the Amazon, 98.5% of the total. Between the fifties, sixties and seventies, numerous indigenous people suffered violence, from murder to the theft of land, due to economic activities such as the rubber trade, the construction of hydroelectric dams and intensive farming: unfortunately several tribes disappeared forever.
Despite being constitutionally recognized and having the support of numerous organizations, indigenous tribes are now more than ever under attack from the Bolsonaro government. A desired territory from an economic point of view, for the presence of mineral reserves (a "gold fever" is threatening the existence of the Yanomami people in northern Brazil) and for a strong agricultural interest. The Brazilian president, already in the electoral campaign, flaunted his hostility towards the indigenous people: among his first acts, in fact, he took away the right to manage the lands from the Brazilian Department of Indigenous Affairs, entrusting it to the Ministry of Agriculture: expansion of the lobbies of agricultural owners in the Amazon no longer has obstacles.

Over the past 25 years, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Brazil, in war over land exploitation. Murders that resulted in a trial officer being released. But only one of the principals ended up in prison.

We are two Indigenous women leaders from communities of the Waorani and Kofan nations in the Ecuadorian Amazon. As we write this, we want to tell you that this story of conquest continues today. In Ecuador, the government and companies continue to set new traps to push forward new conquests, like oil and mining extraction. They use formal procedures, which are not so different from the infamous 1513 Spanish Requirement.”

DON’T BUY GOLD

For all Amazonian tribes, the forest is the most precious asset. For all Amazonian tribes, the forest is their home and their life. But whites don’t see a forest, they only see gold. Zuana Ajorduy Daughter of a mestizo mother and a white father, she was born in a territory that would become Bolivian, in the Viceroyalty of La Plata. Orphaned as a child, she spent a good part of her life in convents. Married at 25, he had five children. Together with Padilla, his companion, he was part of one of the small internal resistance formations, born after the defeat of the so-called urban movements. His determination, courage and enviable leadership earned him the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1816. Wounded in combat, still pregnant with her fifth child, her husband died trying to save her. In 1825 she was promoted to colonel, by decision of Simon Bolivar. He also fought in six major clashes against the monarchists in northern Upper Peru to secure independence processes. Years later, she died in poverty and was buried in a mass grave.
