You're not cool if you don't wake up at 5 in the morning. There are entrepreneurs and workers (and others) who share content on social networks in which they emphasize an unhealthy lifestyle as an essential condition for success. Wake up at 5, work 24/24, sleepless nights, hyper productivity, lack of work-life balance. In today's society, this mentality has been internalized to the point of making sacrifice an element of social recognition: if you suffer, it necessarily means that you are doing something important.
According to research published in Forbes, 66% of millennials are addicted to overwork, 32% said they also work in the bathroom and 70% remain active on weekends.
Yet, according to a study by "Environment International", working 55 hours or more a week increases the risk of stroke by 35% and of dying of a heart attack by 17%. This model, in addition to being toxic, has an important shortcoming: it does not evaluate the quality of the hours dedicated to work, but focuses only on the time and "suffering" factor.
Obviously the work (of the entrepreneur or otherwise) occupies a large part of the life of those who carry it out and requires extreme dedication, but are we sure that in order to achieve results we must necessarily give up a balanced lifestyle?
We don’t like to admit it, but the idea of losing control is one of those that fascinates controlled people like us more than anything else. All truly civilized peoples – the ancients no less than us – have become civilized thanks to the voluntary repression of the original animal self. Are we really, in this room, very different from the Greeks or the Romans? Obsessed with duty, pietas, loyalty, sacrifice? All those things, in short, that impress moderns? And it is a temptation for any intelligent person, and especially for perfectionists like the ancients and us, to try to kill the primitive, emotional, animal ego. But it is a mistake. Because it is dangerous to ignore the existence of the irrational. The more civilized a person is, the more intelligent he is, the more he will be repressed: and the more he will need a system to channel the primitive impulses that have been so much studied to kill. Otherwise, those powerful ancient forces will accumulate and become of such intensity as to be released violently, with greater violence due to waiting, and will often have such vigor as to completely wipe out the will.
This photograph was taken in Ireland in 1972, and depicts a girl shooting with the weapon of her boyfriend, who was wounded in a battle against the British army.
The man survived, transported to a safe place, thanks to the sacrifice of his girlfriend who faced the English soldiers until she was killed.
When the British battalion commander discovered he had been fighting a woman, he ordered his soldiers not to touch her body and allowed the Irish to bury it. They are said to have heard the English commander exclaim: "The queen does not care about us as this woman cared about her man and her land".
The photo was chosen as a symbol for Women's Day in Ireland, alongside the phrase: "Don't be afraid to bond with a strong woman. The day may come when she will be your only army."
Growing up with an always sad mother. With a woman who sacrificed her job to raise two daughters. How many women sacrifice their careers because husbands don’t want them to neglect their children? Growing up with a mother who little by little no longer laughs, no longer sings, does not want to go out, becomes antisocial, changes character. A father who commands with money, with greed, with control over everything from clothes to food. And he has the power to say yes or no. A mother who is stripped of her worth, humiliated because she stays at home and was forced to choose to be close to her daughters. A woman finished, emptied, become unhappy. This was my mother. Destroyed by a man who wanted her only for himself and always at home. Instead she was a very good stylist, she had a lot of creativity and imagination, she taught me so many things. But then it got bad because of my dad. A woman should never be hindered by a husband or life partner or boyfriend.
